    For Patients

Ascendant Anesthesia’s primary goal is to provide high quality, safe, and compassionate care for your upcoming surgical procedure. Your specific anesthesia care will be uniquely formulated and provided by your anesthesia care team. The following are only general guidelines for your surgery and none of this information should override the instructions given to you by your individual physicians.

    PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS:

    • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.
    • Do not drink alcohol or smoke 24 hours before or after your surgery.
    • Take your regularly scheduled morning heart and BP meds on the day of surgery with a small sip of water.
    • Bring all of your medications with you to the pre-anesthesia interview.
    • Do not take your diabetic medication the day of the surgery unless otherwise told by your physician.
    • Please ask your physician which prescribed medications you should take prior to surgery.
    • Stop any diet pills 2 WEEKS before surgery.
    • Remove contact lenses and removable dental appliances before entering the operating room.
    • If you are a chronic pain patient, you may take your regularly scheduled morning dose of pain medications on the day of surgery with a small sip of water.
    • Please let your anesthesia provider know if you are using a fentanyl patch

    DAY OF SURGERY:

On the day of your surgery you will first check in with the surgical staff, be escorted to the preoperative area, change into a gown, be interviewed by a nurse, and have an intravenous line started. Prior to your surgery you will see many individuals, which may include your anesthesia provider(s), surgeon and surgical assistant(s), operating room nursing staff, etc.

Prior to your surgery, you will meet your anesthesia provider(s) for a pre-anesthesia interview. This helps your anesthesia team formulate a unique care plan for your surgical procedure. Please listen carefully and answer all questions as best as you can during this interview. The answers you provide are crucial to formulating the right anesthesia care plan for your surgery. During this interview, an anesthesia consent form will be provided for your review. Please read this carefully. There will be a discussion of anesthesia risk on this form. If you have any questions at all, please ask your anesthesia care team. Modern day advances in anesthesia care have made anesthesia specific risk rare, particularly in healthy individuals. However, there are risks inherent to surgery and anesthesia. The anesthesia consent form is not meant to scare you but merely to inform. We would like to emphasize that anesthesia specific risk is usually rare. Our primary goal is patient safety and we will do all we can to achieve this.

    • Your medical problems,
    • List of medications,
    • If you smoke or drink alcohol and how much,
    • Drug allergies,
    • Any previous problems you have had with anesthesia or any family history of problems with anesthesia.

    POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS:

    • Once certain discharge criteria have been met, you will then be allowed to leave the recovery area to your designated area for discharge (i.e. home, hospital bed, ICU, etc.).
    • A family member or friend must bring you home if you had anesthesia.
    • You should not drive for 24 hours after your surgery.
